Policy development that reflects real school practice

Policies on the use of AI are increasingly common, but their effectiveness depends on how closely they reflect real practice. Policies that are overly technical or detached from day-to-day activities are unlikely to influence behaviour.

A practical AI policy should clarify:

  • What types of AI tools are permitted
  • When approval is required
  • How data must be handled
  • How concerns should be raised

Leaders with a solid grasp of AI are better placed to keep policies proportionate and aligned with safeguarding, data protection and acceptable use arrangements.
